Yesterday I made it to the farmer’s market and had a good time checking out the stalls and buying some lovely treats.
On the veggie side I found some deeply crimson rhubarb and also some rainbow chard. I also tried out a green apple variety called Smoothie, which is a sport of Golden Delicious. This was new to me, nice and crunchie with a bit more flavour than it’s parent.
Another surprise was fresh cherry juice. I found it very concentrated to drink by itself. A touch of soda water lightened it just enough to enjoy on what was turning out to be a pretty warm autumn day. My final purchase was some Mallee honey.I am a complete honey addict and this pleasantly strong flavoured honey really suits my palate.
On the treats side I bought some toffee figs stuffed with marscapone. I don’t know how you stuff a fig but I may need to find out! The same stall was selling an equally luscious vegan chocolate cake topped with hazelnuts.
Returning home we swung by my nephew’s school which was also having a market day. I was too late for most of their garden produce but did manage to score some plums.
Once home I realised that I had the makings of a simple but tasty dessert. I cut the rhubarb into 4 centimetre chunks and laid them in a single layer in an ovenproof dish. I cut the plums into wedges and placed them in the same dish. Over the top of them both I drizzled several spoons of honey.
To add the final touch we ate the baked fruit with some raspberry icecream made by my sister-in-law.
